In November 2018, certain canyon and beach communities in the the Los Angeles area endured the unfortunate devastation and loss associated with the Woolsey Fire. This fire affected communities such as Malibu, Westlake Village, Agoura Hills, Thousand Oaks, Calabasas, and others. Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you who have suffered immeasurable loss of property, life, and lifestyle. This fire burned nearly 100,000 acres, destroyed more than 1,600 structures, and caused smoke, ash, and soot damage to an untold number of homes and businesses lying in its wind-carried, toxic path.
Since the beginning of this large-scale fire event, Blue Moon has been there to help in time of need, one structure at a time, providing our top flight, professional cleaning & restoration services to property owners who have suffered damage or loss, plus we've volunteered to help communities as they rebuild. Perhaps you or your business was one of the lucky ones who escaped unscathed by any damage or loss. If, on the other hand, your home or business has sustained damages as a result of the Woolsey Fire, review your property insurance policy. In addition to covering costs of rebuilding fire-damaged structures, your policy may also cover costs involved in cleaning & restoring your home back to its pre-loss condition in the form of structure cleaning, contents cleaning, odor remediation, and corrosion mitigation. Check your insurance policy language & limits to see what, if any, coverage you might have for your specific damages, and then call us to schedule a visit or walk-thru for estimating.
This heightened period of need means our company has added more staff and equipment to help us be at the ready when you need us. Meanwhile, we suggest wearing proper protection and immediately removing any visible ash or soot from metal or synthetic surfaces, such as window frames, to help mitigate their corrosive effects, discarding any food, beverages, and personal hygiene products that were open or unsealed during the event, washing any ceramics, plastics, metals, and other media that may have been exposed to smoke, soot, or ash in a mild or alkaline cleaning solution, such as Dawn dishwashing liquid, and changing the filter on your HVAC system. Call us when you are ready.
Someone is standing by to assist.
Fire and smoke damage creates a very stressful situation. What remains after a fire can be hazardous and harmful materials which must be properly cleaned up and disposed. Even if your home encountered no direct damage from flames, if your home is in the pathway of traveling smoke, soot, or ash from a nearby fire, there is still damage to the exterior and interior surfaces, contents, and indoor air quality of your home. Ash and soot are corrosive and can begin to modify the chemical composition of surfaces in which it makes contact and is left unaddressed. Often, after a large fire, there is some damage or outage to the power lines serving your home, which can cause your refrigerator to become the perfect dark and moist environment for microbial growth (mold).
Following the devastation of such a loss, Blue Moon offers reassurance in the form of clear guidance and support. Our objective is to stop further damage and salvage as much as possible from fire and smoke damage. We train our professionals to bring all their talents, equipment, and compassion to bare in an effort to get you back in your home as quickly as possible, while keeping you informed of every step in the process.
Blue Moon is certified in fire, smoke, and odor damage restoration by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning & Restoration Certification (IICRC). As such, our company follows a protocol that is codified by the IICRC and known as the S-700 standard for restorers. We utilize a variety of specialized materials and equipment designed to restore and protect damaged surfaces from top to bottom. When Blue Moon's crew arrives following a fire loss, every team member knows time is of the essence and minutes can make a huge difference in terms of preserving surfaces and preventing additional damage.
Smoke and soot can travel over great distances and can be highly corrosive to your home's interior and exterior surfaces. On plastics and certain metal surfaces especially, the chemical change resulting from settled ash and soot begins almost immediately, so it is important to act fast to clean or mitigate further damage to your home's structure and contents.
Our process begins with an assessment of damage inside and outside your home. Where did the fire begin? Where did the smoke come from? Which windows were open? What is the condition of the attic, vents, fans, and insulation? We utilize HEPA vacuums along with chem sponges (or "soot" sponges) to remove soot and ash, and we follow that with a thorough cleansing of your home's contact surfaces with safe and effective mild or alkaline cleansing agents specially-formulated to counteract the effects of ash and soot. We also utilize air scrubbers, hydroxyl generators, chlorine dioxide treatments, and thermal fogging to combat smoke molecules responsible for producing malignant odor.
Also known as a "cook down fire", a protein fire starts at the stove or oven and gets its fuel from the food that has overcooked.
A complex fire is one that begins burning multiple natural and synthetic components inside your home (ie: mattresses).
Heater or furnace fires begin largely due to something combustible being left within vapor distance of a heating element.
Neutral fires, ones that originate outside of your home (woods), can result in large plumes of smoke intrusion into your home.
Ash and soot are toxic and can travel over long distances. It is important to have a damage restoration company that is trained & certified in safe removal.
Smoke molecules can be very small and have cling properties when it comes to clothing, walls, furniture, rugs, and others.
Charring of contents occurs very fast during a house fire. Blue Moon is equipped to safely remove charring.
When the temperature inside a home rises as a result of fire, many manufactured items begin to off-gas posing health risks.
Accelerants, such as fuel canisters, VOCs, liquor, and others must be accounted for and safely handled to avoid larger issues.
When the fire department arrives, they have one mission - put down the fire. This can mean significant amounts of water.
We have a team standing by to serve your emergency restoration needs. We respond quickly to situations where every passing moment is critical.

During any damage restoration, time is critical. As minutes and hours pass without properly addressing certain damage conditions, secondary damages can occur adding mounting costs to an already expensive and stressful situation. Our approaches are endorsed by the Institute of Inspection Cleaning & Restoration Certification (IICRC), and, thus, are accepted by major insurance companies as best-in-class approaches.
After a fire, If the temperature inside your home is below 60 degrees, you can try ventilating your home to help release smoke molecules. When Blue Moon arrives, we will begin the process of removing larger volumes of smoke molecules through the use of negative air movement and air scrubbing.
CHANGE AIR FILTER
If your HVAC system was running during the fire or smoke event, chances are high that the filter serving your HVAC system has become contaminated with soot, ash, or smoke molecules. It's a good idea to change the filter to keep from spreading additional soot, ash, or smoke molecules throughout your home.
CLEAN OUT REFRIGERATOR/REMOVE FOOD FROM CABINETS
If your home has lost electricity, the food inside your refrigerator will spoil quickly and become a major source of odor in your home. Remove all food and clean the interior walls, shelves, and drawers of your refrigerator. Then leave the refrigerator and freezer doors propped open to reduce the likelihood of odor accumulation.
TAPE RAG OR CHEESECLOTH OVER VENT REGISTERS
Protecting your HVAC system is critical. If your home has been impacted by ash or soot, it is a good idea to tape some type of fabric over your vent registers to help catch airborne particles. A wet cheesecloth is best, but any type of damp cloth will help.
